When do I have to make my final decision about adoption and what if I change my mind?
The specific timeframes are different in each state. For example, In Iowa, after the baby is born, a release of custody is signed 72 hours (3 days) later for the baby to go with the adoptive family. Then, a birthmother has 96 more hours (4 days) to change her mind. This is about one week when the birthmother can change her mind. Outside of that timeframe, a birthmother would need to go to the termination of parental rights hearing and prove to the judge that something illegal was done with the adoption procedure. After the one-week timeframe is up, the decision is nearly impossible to change.
In other states, the laws and timeframes vary. However, there will likely be a timeframe of decision-making after the baby is born until a specified period of time. Your pregnancy counselor has specific knowledge of each state. Our trusted partner in adoption, Lutheran Family Service, has over 125 years of expert knowledge of the laws and timeframes in the states where they are licensed to do adoptions.

How do I make a hospital plan and who makes medical decisions for my baby if I pursue adoption?
The birth mother makes all the choices concerning the delivery and medical decisions. Some women may want to take care of the baby alone for 24 hours, or some want to share the care of the baby with the adoptive family. As you go through the process of meeting the adoptive family, you can discuss what the hospital plan should look like, how the child will be named, and more.
